We are perpetually reminded that the era of “smart” everything is upon us. But how does this affect the buildings we inhabit and the city through which we navigate every day? The vision of the “smart city” as an integrated system will only work if there is a comprehensive understanding of how these technologies interact in a realistic application. What does a functioning smart city, fully integrated with its built environment and infrastructure look like? What is the optimal intersection of personalized digital technology, construction techniques, and building management, mechanical and transportation systems? This intensive workshop went beyond the hype and dove into the specifics, as experts from a wide array of related disciplines interrogated the assumptions behind “smart” offerings, and delivered welcome, cohesive thought leadership on the topic.
