Timber Rising

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the world’s premier authority on tall buildings, maintaining the internationally-accepted criteria for measuring height, and determining the “World’s Tallest Building.” In 2019, the Council celebrates its 50th anniversary in its home city of Chicago, where it will also be holding its 10th World Congress, from 29 October to 2 November, on the theme “50 Forward: 50 Back”. As part of this event, CTBUH and the Softwood Lumber Board will host an important one-day symposium on Thursday, 31 October, entitled “Timber Rising.”

Interest in constructing tall buildings from engineered mass timber has reached unprecedented levels in the past few years, with proposals and live construction projects all over the world now underway. The tall building industry is entering new territory with this novel use of one of the world’s oldest and most sustainable building materials. Engineering standards and local building codes are not optimized to foster adoption of these new techniques, but this is changing rapidly. Now is the time to set the agenda, agree standards, and share emerging practices around this exciting new field.

The symposium is kindly being sponsored by the Softwood Lumber Board.
