Developing tall buildings always requires the resolution of issues of site-scale engineering, erecting the structure, and sealing and protecting the envelope. In Europe, stringent energy and environmental restrictions create challenges in excess of those elsewhere in the world. Innovations range from engineering a fireproof deck over an operating expressway, creating an interstitial blind system between façade planes that can buffer solar radiation, and using finite element analysis to create durable silicone glazing systems. Leading practitioners shed light on these precise solutions to challenging problems at multiple scales.
