The affordability and durability of steel have made it a primary structural material for skyscrapers for more than a century, with the invention of the steel frame enabling the construction of multistory buildings without the excessive bulk of load-bearing walls. As buildings grow taller and occupy more of the world’s climatic zones, the field of steel construction will continue to evolve, addressing issues of seismic performance by incorporating more flexibility into the strength properties of steel, and considering how this fully recyclable material can be kept intact for reuse after a building reaches the end of its life cycle. This workshop explored how the steel industry is adapting to these challenges by highlighting new techniques and materials.
