Greater urbanization in high wind and seismic zones, increasing density, are conspiring to increase the likelihood of the average citizen spending time in a tall building that needs a vibration control system in order to ensure occupant safety and comfort. High winds, proximity to road and rail tunnels, and live loads moving about the building all contribute to swaying and vibration conditions. At the same time, building owners and occupiers need to maximize the amount of rentable space, which means vibration control systems have to become more efficiently scaled and well-integrated with building structure. The addition of increasingly sophisticated manufacturing and bio-engineering processes into tall buildings, on educational campuses and elsewhere, also drives the performance standard for vibration control that much higher. This workshop addressed emerging trends, challenges, and responses from the leading practitioners in the field.
