1 November 2019
9:00 AM – 10:20 AM

This presentation builds on this year’s Congress theme of “50 Forward | 50 Back” by exploring how tall building urbanism in Toronto and around the world has evolved in the last 50 years, while also speculating on the next 50 years of advancements in tall building design, urbanism, and sustainability.

The presentation is also intended to discuss future themes in tall building urban design by looking forward at some upcoming developments in Toronto, including an introduction to those developments that will be presented in detail in the subsequent sessions.

Examples of historical case studies from Toronto will include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Toronto Dominion Centre and I.M. Pei’s Commerce Court, representing 50 Back. The presentation will conclude by introducing the Oxford’s waterfront tower at 30 Bay Street known as The Hub, as well as Cadillac Fairview’s (formerly First Gulf’s) East Harbour development, which will represent “50 Forward.”
