In the Americas, a constant stream of technological innovation has allowed historic, contemporary and future skylines to be realized. Some of these are obvious to the casual passerby from the outside of the buildings, while others are buried within electrical vaults inside mechanical floors. Likewise, in order to maintain the safety, well-being and architectural legacy of older tall buildings, which are at risk due to conditions ranging from under-protection from seismic activity to disinvestment, an equally robust culture of innovation must be developed and applied. This session surveys three widely varying problems and solutions, exposing the cutting edge of technical research and innovation, yesterday and today.
