The increase in urban population has coincided with an increase in the pace of change. In a very short time frame, electricity, the elevator and structural steel were introduced to cities. The resulting skyrocketing skylines were greeted as a shocking new reality at the time, and they continue to amaze today. Take a walk through the transformative technologies that brought the skyscraper into reality and preeminence in the public imagination, and assess the implications for tomorrow’s cities.
