Session 2C: Urban Mobility, Reinvented

The elevator was a revolutionary invention in the mid-19th century, as it made the use of buildings taller than a handful of stories practical to inhabit and use. But the elevator has seen further innovations of late, among them the ability for passengers to communicate their destination before boarding, expanding independence for those with limited mobility and the elderly by providing a more interactive, individualized experience. In addition, ropeless elevators may soon permit horizontal travel within and between buildings, connecting public transit, residential and commercial areas in new ways. This session highlights future developments in vertical transportation, and how they will enable formal change for tall buildings and increase occupant satisfaction and convenience.
