Workshop: Interior Spaces

Over the past half-century, the interiors of tall buildings have transformed from cubicle farms with small windows to spaces that strive for superior daylight access, fresh air and flexible accommodations to comfortably host broad programmatic needs. The increasing density of cities and resultant increasing quantity and height of high-rises has also called for a holistic view of how mixed-use buildings operate internally as their own respective, synergistic “cities,” with a critical eye toward the effectiveness of the design and functional relationships between floors, amenities and other elements. This workshop reviewed some of the key changes in cultural expectations that have influenced the development of the ideal office, residential and retail interiors, and focused on how these spaces can be engineered to provide a higher quality of life and a higher quality of satisfaction as urban populations continue to grow.
