Leaders from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) will describe their work on 2 mega-projects that are transforming the west side of Midtown Manhattan.
Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States. Built above several acres of active railroad lines, the development transforms six blocks on Manhattan’s West Side into a thriving new neighborhood featuring residential, commercial, and open public spaces. SOM was the architect and structural engineer for the 72-story mixed-use tower, which highlights a striking design and materiality that both complements and stands apart from the rest of Hudson Yards. 35 Hudson Yards is a bold statement of architectural and engineering integration--overcoming challenging site constraints while maintaining non-stop operation of critical infrastructure.
Brookfield Property Partners’ Manhattan West is a new 5-million-square-foot development symbolizing the renewal of the previously undeveloped Far West Side of Manhattan. Designed by SOM, the project consists of 2 office towers, a residential tower, 2 acres of public open space, and 225,000 square feet of retail and dining amenities. Manhattan West is the vital link between the Midtown business district, the Penn Station complex, the gateway to Hudson Yards, and the north end of Chelsea. The development was made possible by the construction of a 2.6-acre platform that covers active rail tracks connecting Penn Station to New Jersey and Upstate New York.
